Laboratory of Data Analysis and Quality Testing Methods (CAQDAS TM Lab)

CAQDAS TM Lab is an interdisciplinary research and teaching unit at the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University. Its purpose is to conduct basic research in the field of methodology, develop techniques and algorithms for computer-aided analysis of qualitative data (text and visual), adaptation of new methodological solutions in social sciences (grounded theory, content analysis, mixed methods, Text Mining, Web Mining, Visual Mining etc.) and the implementation of implementation projects in science and business, using the effects of research and development work.

The originator and initiator of CAQDAS TM LAB is Dr Grzegorz Bryda, co-founder Dr Krzysztof Tomanek.

The activity of the Laboratory reflects the experience and scientific, research and business interests of its founders. The most important directions of the Laboratory's activity oscillate around the following areas:

I Research and scientific development

Methodology: we focus both on creating new methods of qualitative data analysis (textual and visual) and testing existing methods in terms of their application in areas where they have not been used yet. We build methods validity and reliability tests, and evaluate analytical projects in the CAQDAS area.

Data analysis: we carry out research projects devoted to the development and analysis of large sets of text data. We analyze text data published on blogs, discussion forums and fan pages. We analyze analytically data from group and individual interviews.

II. Education and didactics

Seminars: we organize regular meetings devoted to the issues of methodology and analysis of qualitative data. We invite experts and scientists dealing with the issues of grounded theory, content analysis, text mining, discourse analysis, visual data analysis. We finalize the meetings with a publication in which we share new discoveries within the indicated areas.

Training: we have a computer lab where we teach the methodology of computer-aided analysis of qualitative data (text and visual), the use of CAQDAS programs (QDAMiner, Atlas TI, Maxqda, NVivo etc.) and skills the use of various tools for the analysis of text data. Trainings are carried out in small, usually 10-person groups in Krakow. In special cases, we provide training on request.

Analytical workshops: As part of the workshops, we invite you to cooperate in analytical projects devoted to the issues of qualitative data analysis (text and visual). We act as experts, authors and partners in national and international projects and grants.

III Potential

Methods, techniques, tools: we develop a proprietary method of text data analysis based on the use of classification dictionaries. We cooperate with the creators of CAQDAS tools. We explore existing analytical tools within CAQDAS and support their development through consulting activities. We deal with the adaptation of analytical tools into Polish, while developing their functionalities and scope of application.

Qualitative research: we have Focus Workshop in which we carry out quality projects: discussions group and individual interviews. We carry out tests of the effectiveness of visual messages, we build experimental plans for qualitative research.

Qualitative data analyzes: we carry out analytical projects in the area of qualitative data, both at the basic and advanced level. As part of the applied approaches, we offer data compilation from: group and individual interviews, press, blogs, discussion forums, reports, other text documents.
