The Department of Social Anthropology was established in 1980, but the traditions of reflection on culture at the Jagiellonian University are, of course, much older. Our mentor was Professor Andrzej Waligórski, a student of the Polish-British anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski and a participant in his famous seminar at the London School of Economics. Waligórski conducted his own field research among the Luo people in Kenya in the late 1940s, and then until 1974 he lectured in social anthropology at the Jagiellonian University. The tradition of this discipline was later continued by Professor Andrzej K. Paluch, whose merit was the institutionalization of this activity and the establishment of the Department of Social Anthropology. It was for years the only institution with that name behind the Iron Curtain. Thanks to the efforts of Andrzej Paluch, in 1980 the edition of Dzieła of Bronisław Malinowski was initiated, which ended in 2004 with the publication of the XIII Volume.
Heads of the Department of Social Anthropology of the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University: Andrzej K. Paluch (from 1980 to 1998), Zdzisław Mach (from 1998 to 2001), Mariola Flis (from 2001).
