  • The social work education program offered by the Institute of Sociology is embedded in the context of theory, research and practices undertaken from a sociological perspective - adopting this unique orientation enables a broad and multidimensional analysis of social life

Study program

The program consists of two modules for the theory of social work:

  1. The first discusses general issues of social problems related to their historical conditions and attempts to find solutions within the framework of social policy
  2. The second concerns analysis of the mechanisms of social exclusion and the theoretical foundations for various activities aimed at reducing it


The next three modules cover topics focused on:

  1. Legal basis of social assistance
  2. Research in social work
  3. Methods of social work


The next two modules focus on the research and application foundations of social work. They include seminar and optional courses as well as those focused on analyzing examples of possible apprenticeships in social work.


The program is complemented by language course, additional courses and 60 hours of study visits, 180 hours of professional traineeship and 30 hours of group supervision

How do we work?

The implementation of the study program is based on traditional teaching methods, as well as approaches specific to education in the field of social work:

  • Methodical camps enabling the acquisition of competences in the use of basic methods of social work: individual, family, group, environmental and in the form of a social projects
  • Social work supervision including traineeship carried out during studies
  • Involving experienced people in the teaching process - with specific development needs
  • Courses based on the analysis of the needs reported by students implemented in the form of open courses, co-designed by students under the scientific and didactic supervision of an academic teacher
  • Continuous evaluation of the program implementation process in the form of dedicated courses
  • Stimulating and developing of self-education complementary to the educational program

Where can graduates work?

The knowledge, skills and experience acquired during the studies enable graduates to undertake aid, promotional, educational, advisory and managerial activities in various sectors: private, local government, non-governmental.


Studying at the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University gives qualifications to practice as a social worker at:

  • social welfare centers,
  • care and education, socialization, rehabilitation centers,
  • labor market institutions,
  • nursing homes,
  • addiction therapy centers,
  • integration and reintegration centers.


Graduates can also find employment:

  • in observatories of local and regional social policy,
  • in social companies,
  • as part of their own business, they can offer services on the market in the field of analyzing the processes of social phenomena in the field, personal support and development, and providing social e-work.
