Już w najbliższy czwartek, 7 grudnia br. naszym Gościem będzie Profesor Steven A. Tuch z George Washington University (Waszyngton, DC.), który wygłosi wykład zatytułowany Gender Differences in Whites' Racial Attitudes Revisited: A Twenty-Year Retrospective.

Abstrakt wystąpienia:

Studies of gender differences in orientation toward others have found that women tend to be more concerned with affective processes and are more likely to be other-focused, while men tend to be more instrumental and self-oriented. Some research has extended this finding to include gender differences in racial attitudes, reporting that women are also more favorable than men in their racial outlooks. In a 2003 study published in the journal Social Psychology Quarterly, Michael Hughes and I examined differences between white men and white women across a broader spectrum of racial attitudes using more diverse national samples than earlier studies had employed. We found that gender differences in racial attitudes were small, inconsistent, and limited mostly to attitudes about racial policy. We concluded that our findings were consistent with the view that white women's and white men's racial attitudes are rooted in their shared sense of group position, and that gender-differentiated value socialization played only a small role in racial attitude formation. The current study replicates our original SPQ study using data from the 2022 General Social Survey. We find that, despite substantial changes in both the gender and racial climates in the U.S. over the past two decades, our original conclusion about the lack of gender differences in whites' racial attitudes is unchanged.

Steven A. Tuch jest profesorem socjologii, polityki publicznej i administracji publicznej oraz członkiem Instytutu Studiów Europejskich, Rosyjskich i Eurazjatyckich w Elliott School na George Washington University (Waszyngton, DC.).

Naukowo zajmuje się nierównościami rasowymi i etnicznymi, opinią publiczną w krajach kapitalistycznych i postkomunistycznych oraz metodologią badań ilościowych. Ostatnio opublikował (wspólnie z Paulem M. Kellstedtem i Guyem D. Whittenem) serię czterech książek o charakterze podręcznikowym pod zbiorczym tytułem The Fundamentals of Social Research, wydanych przez Cambridge University Press (2022).

W tym semestrze Steven A. Tuch jest profesorem wizytującym w Instytucie Socjologii UJ i prowadzi przedmiot Sociology in the International Context: A View from America.
