The Master Meetings of the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University is a series of online lectures by eminent representatives of scientific life in Poland and around the world.

During the Meetings the most current and socially important topics are taken up. The formula was conceived as a combination of the invited guest's lecture with an open discussion of the participants of the event. It is an great opportunity to talk with Masters, exchange thoughts and experiences, meet people representing various areas of science and social life.

The series is organized by the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University and the Interdisciplinary Center for Social and Legal Analyzes of the Jagiellonian University in cooperation with the Sociology of Law Section of the Polish Sociological Society and scientific institutions in Poland and abroad.

Kilka słów o wykładzie:

Big Data pozwala na zachłyśnięcie się dawniej niedostępną skalą danych o zachowaniach ludzkich. Można mówić wręcz o „datyfikacji” nauk społecznych. Jednakże powoduje ona także natłok wniosków z przypadkowych korelacji, brak kontekstualizacji wyników, a także płytkie interpretacje. To paradoks, ale im większy zalew danych ilościowych, tym większa potrzeba badań jakościowych. O ile interpretacja tradycyjnych badań ilościowych samodzielnie jest możliwa, bo mają zazwyczaj sporą kontekstualizację, o tyle Big Data często ma jej znacznie mniej. W końcu problemem przestaje być dostęp do samych danych, a staje się nadawanie im sensu. W wykładzie chcę powiedzieć o nowej metodologii badań, podejściu Thick Big Data, łączącym badania etnograficzne z badaniami z zakresu data science.

Dariusz Jemielniak jest profesorem w Akademii Leona Koźmińskiego i faculty associate w Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society na Harvardzie, jak i członkiem Rady Powierniczej Fundacji Wikimedia. Jest członkiem korespondentem PAN. Pracował także na MIT, Cornell University i Berkeley. Najważniejsze książki: "Common Knowledge?" (2014, Stanford University Press), "Collaborative Society" (2020, MIT Press, współaut. A. Przegalińska), "Thick Big Data" (2020, Oxford University Press).
