The statement of the Israeli Sociological Society of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

05.04.2022
Declaration of the Board of the Israeli Sociological Society on Ukraine, March 16, 2022 (Russian and Ukrainian versions follow) The Israeli Sociological Society (ISS) expresses its utter shock, deepest sorrow, and grave wholehearted concern about the Russian military aggression happening in Ukraine. The ISS abhors this war and condemns it in the strongest possible terms. We stand in profound solidarity with the people of Ukraine, social scientists in this sovereign country, faculty and students, and everyone affected by the violent Russian invasion. As scholars and professionals bound by morality, ethics and responsibility to impartial research, we oppose the malevolent, organized and consistent misuse of “historical” claims in fabricating false vindications for this egregious act of armed offensive. We praise and stand with scholars, intellectuals, writers, and journalists elsewhere, including in authoritarian regimes of Belarus and Russia, who have bravely raised their voices against this war, and have defended democracy, civil rights, human rights — and human life.

The ESA Executive Committee statement on the war in Ukraine

10.03.2022
More than any other time, we – human inhabitants of the Earth – are in the either/or situation: we face joining either hands, or common graves 1 So wrote Zygmunt Bauman in Retrotopia, his final message to the world. Half a decade later – under the circumstances in which our global, ever-shrinking world finds itself currently – these words are especially pertinent and poignant. We stand with our colleagues in Ukraine; we join hands with Ukrainians in their homeland and in the diaspora growing with every minute. The ESA abhors the Russian armed invasion of its neighbour, Ukraine. In its first week, the war has already incurred striking human loss and tragedy. This is an unprecedented and unacceptable breach of international agreements and standards of reciprocity. We stand clearly on the side of the victims of the aggression, the people of Ukraine; at the same time, we recognize that the perpetrator is not the people of Russia, but the Kremlin.

Letter from Ukrainian Sociologists

07.03.2022
Address of Ukrainian sociologists to the international sociological community regarding the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine Dear colleagues! Ukraine is defending itself day by day in the war intervention by the putin regime on the territory of a sovereign democracy in Central Europe. The Ukrainian Armed Forces, territorial defense, and ordinary citizens are showing courage and heroism in this war that is damaging our lives and country daily. The aggressor is conducting missile and artillery shelling of civilians and civilian infrastructure, using weapons prohibited by international conventions. Peaceful civilians, our women, and children are dying under the barbaric shelling of the aggressor. The occupiers seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant zone, seized and shelled the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the one largest in Europe. Already today, this threatens to repeat the Chernobyl disaster on a much larger scale.

ISA statement on the Russian military offensive happening in Ukraine

04.03.2022
The International Sociological Association (ISA) expresses its deep concern about the Russian military offensive happening in Ukraine. We stand with the international community in condemning this war. War is never an acceptable solution and is against all the values we uphold. The ISA stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian social scientists, and with our colleagues elsewhere, including in the Russian Federation and Belarus, who have raised their voices against this war, and have defended democracy and human rights. Today, more than ever, we are in need of critical interventions by social scientists. The ISA, as an international community of more than five thousand sociologists, declares its

Open letter of Russian scientists and science journalists against the war with Ukraine

03.03.2022
We, the undersigned Russian scientists and science journalists, declare our strong opposition to the Russian hostilities launched against the Ukrainian people. These hostilities are incurring huge human losses and undermines the foundations of the established system of international security. The responsibility for unleashing a new war in Europe lies entirely with Russia. There is no rational justification for this war. Obviously, Ukraine poses no threat to the security of Russia. The attempts to use the situation in Donbass as a pretext for launching a military operation are totally contrived. The war against Ukraine is unjust and frankly nonsense.
